CK7 – Brave or Buffoon: The Colin Kaepernick Caper

Colin Kaepernick takes a knee to try and look brave, but might just look like a buffoon.

On a rather routine Friday night, in a suburb town off the Bay, a once great athlete, took to the field for the first time in nine months to begin his journey back to being the leader of his team. He sat on the bench waiting for his moment to step onto the field. The crowd was on it’s feet, his team lined up along the edge of the field, the music filled the stadium, the opposing team 160 feet across the grassy field. Many boys have dreamed of a moment like this. This is a moment straight out of the movies. And so few people ever find themselves the focal point of this kind of moment, but this cool late summer evening, was just that moment.

Several years ago my personal favorite band wrote, recorded, and made a video of a song called “Stuck in a Moment”. Yes, the U2 song. It featured a Football Kicker who missed a winning field goal to lose the game. Now he has to live with that moment for the rest of his life. Well, Colin Kaepernick, just became that kicker. Only he didn’t miss a field goal, he didn’t even lose the game. He made a choice BEFORE the game that has forever changed how people think of him.

Take a Stand

Kaepernick feels he needs to make a stand, by sitting. Sitting during the National Anthem. His personal protest is totally legal, it is even protected by the Constitution of the United States. Just because it is legal and protected, does not make it right, or correct. But that is a matter of opinion as well. The stand he is taking, is he can not respect a flag that stands for a country that oppresses black people, and people of color.

Maybe Mr. Kaepernick hasn’t seen the skin color of the top paid player on his own team (Him, at over $100 Million), maybe he hasn’t been able to see the skin color of the majority of the sports league he plays in because of the uniforms the white owners make the players wear. Maybe he hasn’t seen the skin color of the majority of athletes in the other professional sports in this country. Maybe he has forgotten who is President of these United States. And maybe, Kaepernick is just victim who has fallen for the media bias that sells their papers, magazines, websites, and commercials.

Histories Mistakes

Black man held down by White man; Brown man expelled from US by White man; Red man forced to live on Reservation by White man; Oriental men sent to prison camps by White man.

Does the United States of America have a few black eyes, (or should I not use ‘black’ and say ‘bruised’ instead) of course it does. The fact is not what things were done in the past, rather it is what is being done today. But let’s look at the past a moment, before looking at today.

Black & White

It was a group of White men who sat in a room and wrote and signed the Declaration of Independence that freed this country and opened the possibility of freedoms for all of us, and yes Mr. Kaepernick too. And it is this document that first states, “that all men are created equal.” It was a group of White men who, again, gathered in a room to write the Constitution of the United States, which gives Kaepernick and the rest of us to express ourselves how we feel fit.

It was White men who fought and died to free this country. Next, it was White men who fought and died to end slavery of black/colored people. It was a White man who stood up and gave a speech to free ALL of the slaves, regardless of their skin color. Also, it is the White man who who signed the Civil Rights Bill and gave the Black man a voice. And it was a White man who first hired, and paid, the first Black athlete. All of this happened paving the way for Mr. Kaepernick to one day sign a contract for over $100 Million to play a game that many of us play for free in our backyards.

And today?

But all of that was in the past, what is happening today. White men and Black men own companies together. Black men loan White men money, White men loan Black men money. Black men and White men play professional sports, together. Also, Black men and White men work in Washington D.C. making the laws of the country, side by side, and in every state in the Union. Black men and White men fight and protect our freedoms each and everyday, in our Countries Military. Black men and White men put on the same Blue Uniform everyday and keep our towns and cities safe. And Black men and White men put on suit and ties everyday and fill Mayor, City Council, County Commissioner, State Wide, and Governor posts in every state in the Union. Finally, a Black man holds the highest office in the country.

So I ask Mr. Kaepernick, “who is being oppressed?” Maybe I should change that and ask, Who is oppressing who? Seems to me, the White man has no issue with the Black man. You, Mr. Black man, are demanding $100 Million from the White man. Black Lives Matters is demanding the White man GIVE them their demands. And Black actors are demanding the White man give them Oscars.

Why should you, or they, get their demands? Maybe these things should just be earned. But what do I know? I’ve only had to work for my less than $100 Thousand a year living (that’s less than 1/10 of a percent of Mr. Kaepernick’s earnings). The White men (and women) who fight and die to protect Mr. Kaepernick’s freedom to earn hundreds of millions, earn less than a tenth of a percent of his earnings. Maybe Kaepernick would be open to switching salaries?

Setting the example

As for Kaepernick’s protest, it holds no water. If he truly wants to make a difference in the lives of Black people, he needs to be an example that a Black man can succeed in our country. So many of the young Black kids that are looking up to men like him, are only seeing the bad examples. How can a young man grow up to be a great man, when all he has to show the way, is thugs?

As for me, I want to look for and celebrate young people, and adults who find a way to better themselves. Who work hard to provide for themselves and family, and not rely on free handouts or make excuses. And when a now all but washed up athlete, shows the kind of immature child he truly is, as Kaepernick and Ryan Lockte, I want to find the example of just the opposite, like Russel Wilson and yes, even, Micheal Phelps. Oh wait, did I just include a Black man as a positive role model? See, even this White man promotes Black men. Maybe someday, the Black man will finally be color blind, this White man has been for years.

Colin @Kaepernick7 will you lead the way? I would gladly join you on that.

Topics of Sex, Politics, and Religion

No sex, politics, and religion topics at the Kitchen Table

Topics of sex, politics, and religion always make for lively conversation. These three things you’re never supposed to talk about… with friends, family, strangers, or at the dinner table. So let’s do it here, right now.

These three topics are such personal topics to each of us, we believe and FEEL them to the deepest of our cores. That must be why we get so passionate about them, that the saying we shouldn’t talk about them even came about. But why is it such the no no, that when we do actually talk about any of these, we seem to always jump to a “I hate you” level of a fight or argument? It can’t be just because, “It’s MY belief.” After all, think of all of the sports fans.

I heard a story the other day of a man who was in Boston visiting, and he was with his 12-ish year old son. He saw a Red Sox’s hat and was going to buy it for his son. Before he could get to the register, the man’s wife saw what he was doing and declared, “You can’t do that, WE are Yankee fans!” Yet they live in Texas Ranger territory. And they don’t even really follow the MLB and might get in a game a year, on a good year.

Even with that level of deeply rooted passion, we don’t ever really get to the level of absolute fist-a-cuffs in our discussing these topics. So, maybe it’s something different than the belief in the topic itself?

Personally, I don’t discuss sex with anyone, because it is something special and private between me and my wife. Other topics around sex, like the whole “gender issues” and LGBT topics, I have no issue discussing, as well as, politics and religion. And I no longer feel the need/desire to resort to name calling and nasty comments and fighting.

I know for me, the issues I had around these topics, was not the topic itself, but the fact of being heard. With all of the social media sites (including Medium) we just are not HEARING each other any longer. I know what I know, and I know what I believe. Why should someone else have the power over me to affect how I believe? And I have no reason to get mad or angry when someone else has their own opinion.

Can’t we just all get along with each other and discuss with each other why we think, do, say, and believe the way we do? And when I say discuss, I not only mean, be able to speak freely on what my thoughts and beliefs are, but then to shut up and truly listen to what the other is saying. And maybe by doing that, we can get along with each other, and learn from each. Even if in that learning, we simply only learn why the other person believes different than I do, but we might also learn something new about the topic, and maybe even something new about ourselves.

There is still good in America

America is full of good fathers

There is still good in America, as this story shows. Sunday was Father’s Day, yet it was a couple of Father’s who were offering kindness.

I live in a small town, which probably was a contributing factor to this story, and one of the reasons I moved out of the big city, into a small town. On our way out of town I dropped my wife off at the store to pick up a couple of things, as I went to fill up the truck up with gas.

As my wife is walking through the store she keeps remembering a couple more things she needed for the day, baby wipes, a gift, and of course a copy of Hobby Farm magazine (insert eye roll emoji here). The only problem is, she didn’t grab a cart or basket. So, here she is, two arm loads of stuff and trying not to drop anything. As she is walking the aisles a man notices her double arm load of random items. He walks over to her and offers his cart to her. She says thank you, but I’m heading to the register now. Then another man sees her gripping two bags of chips, two salsas, baby wipes, gift bags, tissue, a card, and 5 magazines, and offers to go and get her a cart. Again, she says thank you, but I’m done now and heading to the checkout.

In a time when there are reports of protesters at political rallies yelling they want to kill the candidate and candidates encourage punching other protester who want to throw things on stage, we never really hear about the good people are doing. As the old saying says, America is great, because Americans are good. Maybe not as many people, but surely very large portions of Americans are good people and truly want to be good. I have quit watching most news (for many more reasons than this) because all I seem to hear is bad and negative things going on. Again, an old saying, If it bleeds, it leads. And yet, whenever we hear of a great human interest story, we all share it and even cry over it, saying how great is that.

I, for one, will start sharing the good and great stories of people helping people, and people just being good people. Let’s spend more time telling of the good stories in America and leaving the negative bad stories to the dying news networks.

America still has Greatness, let’s share it.

LGBT lives matter, and so do all the others

Lives Matter

LGBT lives matter, and so do all the others, seems rather logical, but in today’s politically charge world, it seems to lessen the power of each movement. One of the things I do is, I am currently the President and Board Chair of North Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity. This week we had our board meeting and I have been trying to have some type of devotional as part of the opening to the meeting. So, when I sat down to figure out what to bring this month. This is what I ended up writing, and then shared with the board and staff.

This has been a tough week. With the largest mass shooting on recorded and the largest terror attack since 911. It has sparked off even more fighting and arguing on multiple topics. The problem is, all the antics have distracted us from who we really are. We are all human beings. We may have different backgrounds, different beliefs. I do not want to sermonize or demonize, there is plenty of that going on already. Instead, I wanted to share a few verses and a thought or two on who we are.

John 16:33
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Romans 12:19
Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

So as followers or believers in God, we should take the moment to morn those who were lost in the tragic event, but not get caught up in the bashing of a people, or taking the event to push an agenda. Instead, we should continue on with our own calling. Building and better the community around us. Helping those in need, connecting with the marginalized, and sharing our blessing with others. Because, it doesn’t really matter what label is put on someone, because we all share the same label “human being”.

The shooter is dead, his wife may end up in jail, his family has their own issues to deal with now, which will be more than plenty to handle. God is big enough to handle whatever justice needs to be done. I’m not going to make any difference in any justice they may deserve, but I can make a positive impact in someone else’s life, for the rest of their life. I/we get to be a part of changing a persons or family’s history, forever. It may feel like evil is winning today, but good will always overcome in the long term.

I feel that Habitat’s mission statement puts it best; “Putting God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity builds homes, communities, and hope.” By constructing a house, we create a building that a family makes into a HOME, by engaging with friends, family, and volunteers, we create the COMMUNITY, and by combining them both, we build HOPE that life can be better tomorrow than it was today.

It does not matter if someone is gay, straight, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgendered, Islamic, Jewish, Mormon, Catholic, Baptist, Atheist, Russian, Chinese, American, Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, black, brown or white. The one thing we ALL are is human, and all human life deserves to be treated with the same respect, no one is better than another.

So, today, I choose to focus on life and making it better, my own life, the life of my family, the life of my friends, and the lives of those in my community, and any others I can. That is why I am with Habitat, and will encourage and promote this same thing with any and every one I can.

ALL LIVES MATTER, all lives should be celebrated, and all lives should be given help when needed. With God’s help, all things are possible.

1 Corinthians 10:31
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
